Overview

PPE Selection & Use VR training

DrillXR PPE Selection and Use trains the decision that protective equipment depends on but rarely gets drilled: matching the right protection to the actual hazard, fitting it correctly, and checking it before relying on it. The simulation reproduces the failures that make PPE a false comfort rather than a real barrier: the wrong equipment chosen for the hazard at hand, a poor fit that leaves a gap, damaged or expired gear pressed into service, and PPE skipped or pulled off under time pressure. Inside the headset the worker assesses the task and its hazards, selects equipment matched to each one, inspects it for damage or wear, dons and fit-checks it in the correct order, and doffs, inspects and stores it after use. Each wrong choice carries a consequence the trainee can see.

PPE is the last line of defence, and treating it as a box-ticking handout is exactly how injuries happen. The Factories Act 1948 places a clear duty on occupiers to supply and ensure the use of suitable protective equipment, the Building and Other Construction Workers Act 1996 extends that obligation across construction sites, and a site PPE hazard-assessment and occupational health and safety plan defines which protection belongs against which task. The common failure is not refusal to wear PPE but wearing the wrong PPE, ordinary gloves against a chemical, a loose respirator, a cracked face shield, and trusting it. DrillXR lets a workforce rehearse the assess-select-inspect-fit discipline repeatedly and assessably, so the right choice becomes habit before the hazard is real.

Why train ppe selection & use in VR

PPE training usually stops at a poster and a signature, and that is precisely why it fails: knowing the equipment exists is not the same as choosing and fitting it under pressure. Immersive VR makes the choice consequential. The trainee assesses a real task, selects from a kit, and watches in simulation what happens when a chemical glove is missed, a respirator is left loose, or a damaged item is used anyway. Fit becomes a physical sequence the learner performs in order rather than a line they skim. None of this can be taught by handing someone a glove, and a classroom cannot make a learner feel the gap a poor seal leaves. DrillXR makes the wrong choice survivable and instructive, so the assess-then-select habit lands before a real hazard tests it.

Inside a ppe selection & use session

A session opens with a task brief on the shop floor that carries several hazards at once. The trainee first assesses the task and identifies what threatens them, chemical splash, sharp edges, airborne dust, impact, rather than reaching for whatever is nearest. They then select PPE matched to each hazard from the available kit; choose ordinary gloves against the chemical and the simulation registers an exposure. They inspect each item for damage, wear or expiry, rejecting a cracked face shield or a perished glove. They don and fit-check in the correct order, sealing the respirator and confirming coverage. The task is performed with protection in place, and the run closes as the worker doffs in the safe sequence, inspects the equipment and stores it correctly. Skipped inspection or out-of-order donning is logged.

Scoring & certification

DrillXR scores every attempt against the procedure: hazards assessed, PPE selected to match each hazard, equipment inspected, donned and fit-checked correctly, and doffed, inspected and stored. Each step earns a pass, a partial or a fail, with the decisive failures captured explicitly, a mismatch between PPE and hazard, a damaged item used, a fit-check skipped, or a careless doffing sequence. A weighted per-step result rolls up into an overall competency outcome, and a passing run issues a dated certificate tied to the worker's record. Results stream over xAPI and SCORM into the customer LMS and the DrillXR compliance dashboard, where a safety officer can confirm staff have demonstrated correct PPE selection for their tasks, evidence it to a Factory Inspectorate, and target re-training where the wrong choices recur.

Deployment on your site

PPE Selection and Use runs standalone on Meta Quest, Pico and PC-VR and launches in kiosk mode, so a headset at induction or the shop-floor entrance boots straight into the module for the next worker with no menus to navigate. The scenario is configurable to the site: the real PPE inventory, the hazards present in specific tasks, the inspection criteria for each item and the site PPE hazard-assessment can be mirrored so the training matches the equipment workers are actually issued. A fleet of headsets runs from one console with completion data feeding the central dashboard. For manufacturing, construction, chemicals and mining operators, this delivers consistent PPE competence across shifts and sites and proves, per worker, that correct selection and fit are being trained.
